China is expanding its ceramic manufacturing presence in sub-Saharan Africa as it seeks to overcome trade barriers in key markets such as the European Union and United States.

According to sources in the Castellón tile industry, Chinese groups operate factories across Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Senegal, Zambia and Nigeria. Groups including Twyford Tile, Sunda International, Royal Ceramics and West African Ceramics are involved.
The Italian employers' association Acimac estimates that China has 30 operating factories across 17 African countries, with annual production capacity exceeding 900 million square metres. Chinese investment also extends to Latin America, with factories in Peru and Mexico. The strategy has raised concerns in Europe, where governments are calling for stronger trade defence measures to protect local ceramic industries.
