Italian lighting brand Penta has unveiled RUNA, a new lighting collection designed by Marco Acerbis that draws inspiration from the branching structures found in nature. Combining sculptural aesthetics with dynamic lighting technology, the collection explores the relationship between light, form and the natural world.

At the heart of RUNA is a branching optical structure that appears to float in space. Slim LED bars are concealed within borosilicate glass tubes finished with a delicate reflective coating, creating a minimalist appearance when the lamp is switched off. The hidden light source allows the purity of the design to take centre stage until illuminated.

Rather than switching on instantly, RUNA features a progressive lighting sequence that begins at the centre of the fitting before gradually extending along each branch. The effect is intended to resemble the silent movement of sap through a tree, transforming the lamp into a dynamic feature within the space.

'RUNA interprets light as an organic phenomenon. The illumination is not instantaneous but dynamic: from the centre of the object, the light spreads along the branches, evoking the silent flow of sap that nourishes the growth of nature,' said designer Marco Acerbis.

The collection has evolved into three distinct versions, each offering a different interpretation of the original concept.

The original RUNA features a spherical glass diffuser measuring 45cm in diameter. It is joined by RUNA Naked, which removes the diffuser to highlight the purity of the branching structure, and RUNA Maxi, which encloses the optical system within a larger 61cm glass sphere.

According to Penta, the Maxi version has been specifically developed for use as a standalone statement piece above dining tables, offering balanced proportions and a stronger visual presence. In the versions fitted with glass diffusers, the two glass hemispheres create a soft, enveloping light suitable for a wide range of residential and contract interiors.

The name RUNA references the ancient Germanic and Nordic runes, evoking ideas of ancestral language and humanity's connection to the forces of nature. Penta describes the lamp as a symbolic object that carries light, energy and meaning, transforming illumination into a living element that expands through space.

The collection reflects the company's approach to combining technical innovation with expressive design, using light not only as a functional element but also as a storytelling medium.

Penta is recognised internationally for its decorative lighting collections, combining contemporary design with Italian manufacturing expertise. Working with leading international designers, the company develops lighting solutions for both residential and contract environments, balancing aesthetics, functionality and visual comfort through its Made in Italy design philosophy.
