Resource Furniture expands in Los Angeles, Visual Comfort opens three new stores, and more

2024.08.01

From store debuts to new flagships, the showroom industry is as hot as the summer heat. BOH has gathered all the showroom news to have on your radar this month.

Showroom spotlight

“The showroom model is here to stay,” Challie Stillman, the vice president of creative at Resource Furniture, tells Business of Home. The brand, known for multifunctional, transforming furniture pieces like wall beds that turn into desks and coffee tables that become dining tables, has expanded its Los Angeles showroom, doubling its size from 1,600 to 3,320 square feet.

The company has been located in the Los Angeles space since 2013. The former art gallery has no windows, only skylights, and might at first sound like an unlikely showroom space for most brands. For Resource Furniture, access to wall space was the perfect way to showcase its collections of wall-mounted storage solutions. The team had been looking for a larger space for the past few years but couldn’t find anything that worked. Then a building with the same layout, located right across the parking lot, became available. “You have that same incredible feeling when you walk in, with that L.A. sunshine drenching the whole space in natural light,” says Stillman of the new space, which the brand has outfitted with a series of vignettes. “We wanted to make sure that both spaces felt equally activated, so that there was enough drawing you from one building to the next—we didn’t have all the showstoppers in one building and then just passive seating in the other building.”

The first product that greets guests in the new section is the motorized Tonale sectional, a sofa with a pull-down-bed wall unit and the brand’s first motorized product. There’s also the brand-new LGM, a rotating bookcase with a TV on the front that turns into a bed. The new space also features a kitchen, allowing the brand to host more events. “We’re able to throw a real party,” says Stillman. “It’s important that we use our showrooms as a hub and open our doors graciously to support [designers] with our hospitality.”

In a post-pandemic world where some think in-person shopping is dwindling, Resource Furniture believes it’s not going anywhere. “We thought for a moment that people’s buying habits would really be focused toward online shopping, but as we were able to open our showrooms again, it reinforced how important the showroom experience is,” she says. “Even if the buying process starts online, people really do want to see this furniture in person—particularly our type of furniture—because there are so many mechanisms involved. It is just so much better studied in person.” 314 N. Crescent Heights Blvd., Los Angeles
