Decorating for Fall: Why Natural and Authentic Works Best
2019.09.12
When it comes to holiday decorating, retailers have four main trends to focus on for the 2019/20 season: tender festivities, essential ceremonies, sweet traditions and luminous celebrations. But how can these Christmasworld trends be applied in concrete terms? Designer Claudia Herke from Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano gives tips on the trends and shop design.
For fall, decorations reflecting the ‘essential ceremonies’ aesthetic works well. As in nature, this trend calls for calm and cool colors alongside warm, baked colors and matcha green. Plus, a simple and rustic look allows retailers emphasize craftsmanship and nature, displaying simple decorations for everyday moments.
“Naturalness and modernity, combined with rough and rustic aspects, are the distinguishing features of ‘essential ceremonies.’ In general, the look is handcrafted, natural and authentic. It's my absolute favorite for autumnal shop decorations,” Herke said.
How to Get the Look
One way to express this reduced style, with a modern accent, is through dried flowers and slender tied wreaths.
“Wreaths are not only suited to the Christmas period: they can also be viewed in an autumnal setting,” Herke said. “They are equally well suited as photo motifs for the background to your window decorations. This works best with an elegant black and white look. Or you can play with different sizes of wreaths suspended freely.” Alternatively, the look can be realized with pine cones and sprigs, acorns, larch twigs and grasses.
“Combine twigs with dried leaves and eucalyptus leaf garlands. You can also make these yourself, by carefully interweaving fresh eucalyptus leaves,” Herke added. Rough and coarsely hewn wooden blocks can also be used for displaying products. When stacked, they easily enhance the natural character of this theme.
