Black, white and grey are making a return in interiors, but the familiar stark minimalism associated with the palette is being replaced by warmer tones, tactile surfaces and greater emphasis on materiality, according to LAB Colour the World.

The paint brand describes the emerging direction as a more relaxed form of minimalism, with chalky whites, powdery greys, soft blacks and dark woods creating interiors that feel understated while retaining depth and character.
Imperfection takes centre stage
The trend reflects a growing interest in simplicity and authenticity, with irregular textures, visible brushstrokes and small imperfections used to make spaces feel more personal. Rather than relying on smooth, polished surfaces, natural materials are combined with coarse fabrics, matte metals and dark wood. The result is a softer interpretation of minimalism in which materials are allowed to retain their character.

Grey gets a new role
Grey is highlighted as a particularly important shade for 2027. Instead of cool, uniform greys, the focus is shifting towards mineral, stony and powdery tones, as well as shades with beige undertones. LAB says these nuanced greys can connect light and dark, warm and cool materials, while changing in appearance according to the surrounding light.
Its Stone no. 28 combines beige nuances with medium grey, while Mineral Chic no. 728 and Loft no. 113 introduce a more industrial character. Soho no. 452 moves towards dark taupe, adding warmth and softness.

White and black become more nuanced
White is also moving away from bright, clinical tones. Elegance no. 435 demonstrates how a chalky white can create a warmer and more refined appearance, while Black Clay no. 40 offers a deep black without the severity of a graphic black. With a restrained colour palette, LAB says details such as gloss, texture, shadow and undertone become increasingly important, allowing monochrome interiors to remain visually varied.

Texture shapes the palette
The finish of a surface is becoming as important as the colour itself. LAB urban, with its matte velvet finish and subtle texture, is presented as an example of how walls, doors and frames can gain a powdery appearance and additional depth.
LAB excellence can also be used across multiple surfaces, including walls, ceilings, frames, doors and radiators, creating greater visual cohesion while allowing differences in form and material to remain visible.
Colour returns through accents
The return of black, white and grey does not mean that colour disappears altogether. Instead, stronger shades can become more impactful when used selectively against a subdued backdrop.

Cobalt blue, greyish purple, refined green and deep wine red are among the accent colours highlighted by LAB. The emphasis is on careful dosage, allowing a single contrasting shade to provide a focal point without overwhelming the space. The overall direction points towards a quieter interpretation of luxury, where black, white and grey provide the foundation while light, materials, texture and form create the visual interest.
