With another heatwave set to hit the UK and other European countries this week, new research from British Wool has highlighted the extent to which temperature is disrupting sleep, while experts suggest that bedding materials could play a role in helping sleepers remain comfortable overnight.

According to a survey of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by British Wool, one in five adults wake every night because they feel too hot or too cold, while 79% experience temperature-related sleep disruption at least once a week.
The research also highlights the unusual measures some people are turning to in search of better sleep. 20% have tried magnesium, while 6% have tried mouth taping and 5% have used red light therapy. Among Gen Z respondents, 10% have used crystals under their pillow, while 22% have turned to TikTok for sleep hacks.
Research from Bangor University, carried out in partnership with British Wool, suggests that changing bedding materials could provide a more effective solution, with natural fibres such as wool helping regulate temperature more effectively than synthetic alternatives.
Haldi-Kranich Wood, Wool Interiors Specialist at British Wool, says: "As the nights warm up, many people find their sleep becomes more unsettled, often waking up feeling too hot or too cold.
"While it's tempting to immediately switch to a lighter duvet, the real difference often comes down to the materials your bedding is made from and how well they respond to changing temperatures overnight.
"As we sleep, our bodies naturally release heat and moisture. If that heat and moisture become trapped, it can create an uncomfortable sleeping environment that leaves us tossing and turning throughout the night.
"It's a more common issue than many people realise. Almost one in five UK adults say they wake up feeling too hot or too cold every night, with the majority experiencing it at least once a week.
"Natural fibres like wool can help regulate this more effectively. Wool is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, helping to draw moisture away from the body while maintaining a more balanced sleeping environment throughout the night.
"Rather than making you feel warmer, wool works with your body's natural temperature regulation, helping you stay consistently comfortable whether the temperature drops overnight or suddenly rises.
"This can make a real difference to sleep quality, particularly during spring and summer when we're often experiencing several seasons in a single week!"
