Germany's imports from China increased by 6.2% during the first five months of 2026, reinforcing China's position as the country's largest source of imports, according to new figures published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Between January and May 2026, German imports from China reached €72.4 billion, up from the same period in 2025. In May alone, imports rose by 2.1% year-on-year to €14.0 billion, compared with €13.7 billion in May 2025.

China remained Germany's most important trading partner for imports during the January–May period. At the same time, Germany's import surplus in trade with China widened significantly, increasing to €42.8 billion, compared with €33.5 billion during the corresponding period in 2025.

The data also showed a sharp decline in German road motor vehicle exports to China during the period.

The figures were released by Destatis as part of its latest foreign trade statistics. Detailed foreign trade results are available through the Federal Statistical Office's GENESIS-Online database and the foreign trade section of the Destatis website.
