Why is it important to work with a variety of vendors, and to carry merchandise sourced from different countries? Recent issues with tariffs, shipping and supply chain issues have shown how difficult it can be when one country of origin or vendor becomes unreliable or more expensive. Diversity also builds strength in your product mix, which can increase sales.

Many of us are extremely dependent on China for our merchandise. Statistics show that as much as 70-90 percent of today’s toys, holiday decor and general gift merchandise is made in China. A number of our suppliers are expressing their concern about this situation by moving some production to Vietnam, India, Mexico and other countries. It’s wise to support this effort by paying attention to the country of origin for products you order from these vendors.

Another way to diversify your product sources is to buy from American or Canadian companies, including local artisans. Visit craft fairs to find craftspeople who also sell wholesale.  Regional gift shows often feature small manufacturers from the area. Faire is a good source for makers too small to have a trade show presence.

It’s good to build a relationship with more than one core supplier. We had a store on our street many years ago that centered around a line of licensed merchandise. They had to close when their key vendor decided to no longer sell to them. There is truth in the old saying that it’s a bad idea to put all your eggs in one basket.

Buying from a variety of vendors gives you a more interesting merchandise mix and allows you to be responsive to trends in the marketplace.  The diversity of products also appeals to a diversity of shoppers, which will help you grow your customer base.
