Aki-Home, California's New Home Furnishings Retailer, Expands into Los Angeles County with Opening of Torrance Location

2014.07.01

Nitori, Japan's leading furniture and home furnishings retailer, expands its U.S. presence into Los Angeles County with the addition of the third Aki-Home store. Building on its current Orange County locations in Tustin and Fullerton, the latest store will open in Torrance on April 12th at 19800 Hawthorne Boulevard.

Aki-Home is part of the long-term and global expansion plans of Nitori Holdings, Inc. The Southern California area was chosen as the starting point for the U.S. market due to its strong economy, population density, and diverse culture. Nitori plans to continue expansion throughout the U.S. as part of an aggressive growth strategy achieving brand recognition globally.

Nitori currently operates 331 stores internationally: 312 stores in Japan, 17 in Taiwan and 2 in the United States. Aki-Home's first two stores opened simultaneously on October 19, 2013. The Tustin store is 30,000 square feet, while both the Fullerton and upcoming Torrance stores are 20,000 square feet.

The April 12th Grand Opening of Aki-Home's Torrance location begins with a performance of traditional Japanese Taiko drummers at 8:30am and a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:00am. Shopping guests will then be admitted and the first 50 shoppers will receive a $10 Aki-Home Gift Card.

Other event highlights include product demonstrations and hourly raffles. A Grand Prize drawing will be for a $1000 Aki-Home room makeover. Free canvas tote bags will be given with purchase, and 97.1 Amp FM will be broadcasting from 2:00 to 4:00pm.

Similar to the Nitori stores in Japan, Aki-Home continues the strategy of high design at value prices.

The stores feature products for the home such as furniture, décor, housewares and accessories. Departments are organized by "rooms" of the home including: living, dining, bed, bath, kitchen, office and more. Product is also featured in lifestyle displays throughout the store.

About Nitori Holdings, Inc.

Founded in 1967, Akio Nitori started his company as a single, small furniture store in Hokkaido, Japan. Following a business trip to California in 1972, he witnessed how differently Americans shopped and lived. Compared to Japan's crowded living spaces, California homes were spacious with separate areas for entertaining and dining. American consumers went to convenient retail stores to buy color-coordinated furniture and accessories to enhance their beautiful homes. In contrast, the Japanese had only mismatched offerings to choose from. Most shocking to Akio Nitori was how inexpensive the high-quality merchandise in the U.S. was compared to similar products in Japan. He recalls "I was so astonished by the difference in furniture and interior decor products in terms of price, selection, and quality." It was at this moment that Akio Nitori decided to bring back to Japan what he had learned in the U.S.

Today, Nitori has 331 stores internationally: 312 stores in Japan, 17 in Taiwan and 2 in the U.S. In addition to retail stores, Nitori Holdings, Inc. also supports manufacturing, logistics, and communications on a global scale.
