Boho design: Home décor trend for this summer | Voices

While Americans have embraced minimalism for years now, we are beginning to see a shift towards them favoring a more lived-in space. It is also likely inspired by a move towards being eco-friendly and opting for secondhand pieces, rather than buying new.
We believe that boho design is the home décor trend of the summer, as searches related to the aesthetic have skyrocketed in the U.S. The findings show that Pinterest searches around “boho design” have surged in the U.S. over the past three months.
Boho design, short for bohemian design, is characterized as a free-spirited aesthetic that combines an eclectic mix of patterns and colors, layered textures and vintage pieces. In particular, an earthy boho aesthetic is favored in the U.S., as searches for “earthy boho bedroom” on Pinterest are up by a whopping 308% in the past three months.
While not quite as popular, searches for “earthy boho living room” increased by 55% on Pinterest, perhaps suggesting that Americans prioritize this carefree vibe for their bedrooms.
As boho design aims at creating a nature-inspired space, plants play a huge part in the aesthetic.
In line with this, hanging planters and large terracotta pots are becoming common décor for those embracing the trend, with searches for these having surged on Pinterest by 209% and 47%, respectively.
Searches for “chocolate brown couch living room ideas” have also shot up by 63%. The addition of this piece fits the boho design as the style encompasses earthy, natural tones.
The boho design aesthetic allows for this as thrifted furniture tends to lean towards vintage décor, which complements the style well.
Various influencers have also taken to the trend, as it serves as an aesthetically pleasing backdrop. The rise in its popularity on Instagram and TikTok feeds is likely to fuel the trend further.
My company gathered data from Pinterest trends between January and April of this year to make this determination. We focused on the terms “earthy boho bedroom,” “earthy boho living room,” “chocolate brown couch living room ideas,” “hanging planters” and “large terracotta pots.”
From March to June, interest in combining boho design with a gothic aesthetic has surged, with searches for “boho goth” up by 177% during this period.
Again, Americans are especially keen to create this look in their bedrooms; searches for ‘black boho bedroom’ and ‘boho witchy bedroom’ have increased by 102% and 152%, respectively.
Interior designers may also notice more demand for items like worn leather couches and dark wood coffee tables, as searches for ‘dark boho living room’ have shot up by 117%.
While the boho aesthetic reflects a connection to nature, which is a common theme in the summer months, the gothic boho style demonstrates an unexpected shift toward darker tones.
Usually, as real estate buying agents, we would highlight features in properties that include bright colors and light textiles; however, this research suggests the opposite should be the focus.
By examining Pinterest searches, we can predict surprising style trends that interest buyers, which might otherwise be overlooked.
This insight can help speed up sales, as a home’s design and aesthetic can significantly influence a potential buyer’s opinion of the property. If it aligns with their vision, they are much more likely to fall in love with the place and make an offer.
