9 WAYS TO DECORATE WITH GEOMETRIC PATTERNS

2015.07.16

WITH A RUG

It's no secret that Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan are big fans of color and pattern, and in their Florida home, geometric patterns are everywhere. Bold shapes take center stage in Adler's own Richard Nixon rug, the vintage wallpaper behind the sofa, and even the lines of the chairs and end tables.

WITH WALLPAPER

In Manhattan designer Deborah Buck's Upper East Side apartment, a graphic Clarence House wallpaper gives the living room a cozy feel, while establishing a slightly retro vibe. It also creates a perfect showcase for a collection of opaline glass boxes and lamps by setting up a creamy color contrast, with additional help from the lampshades and upholstery.

WITH UPHOLSTERY

In the Long Island living room of Bob Weinstein and Eric Hensley, solid whites and pale hues prevail, vintage Vladimir Kagan chairs upholstered in eye-catching Maharam fabric are the stars of the space.

WITH A SOFA

In the Costa Mesa, California, home owned by designers Marc and Melissa Palazzo, a pair of matching sofas upholstered with a Lulu DK fabric ground a light and airy space. The bold upholstery, featuring a brown-and-white diamond grid, anchors the couple's eclectic collection of furniture and objects.

WITH PAINT

In the New York City kitchen of Eve Robinson and Joshua Wiener, Silverlining Interiors painted multicolor squares over a grid of white, giving the room a gallery-like feel. The grid patterns continue underfoot with simple tiles.

WITH BOOKSHELVES

The media room of a New York country house becomes a kaleidoscope of shapes and hues, thanks to designer Muriel Brandolini's choice of color-blocked pieces, from the laminated bookshelves by Lloyd Schwan from Property to the Pierre Charpin chaise longues. Even the accessories—Judy Ross pillows with bold circles, and cube side tables—continue the trend.

WITH PILLOWS

Employing the more subtle side of geometric patterns, designer Ron Marvin used a restrained black-and-white rug from West Elm in his own Manhattan apartment. The piece's zigzagging design breaks up the symmetry of the room, creating a more relaxed, laid-back vibe. Plus, Greek Key-trimmed pillows continue the theme.

WITH MIRRORS

Geometric patterns don't always have to come from fabrics and wall coverings. In this living room, French designer Martial created his own pattern by applying convex mirrors to the wall in an evenly-spaced arrangement. That decorative flourish adds a contemporary touch to a room furnished with Louis XV chairs and Chinese and African stools.

WITH LIGHTING

In architect Jeffrey Povero's Manhattan apartment, a custom-made Beauvais rug, based on a David Hicks design, pulls a masculine living room together. The small-scale pattern adds visual interest without overwhelming the space, while also lightening up the dark leather furniture. In the corner, geometric lighting adds to the room's appeal.
